PHOENIX – Phil Mickelson had an opportunity to become just the 5th player to ever shoot 59 in an official PGA TOUR event, but it was not to be. Mickelson needed to birdie just one of his last two holes to get to 12-under-par. Mickelson lipped out a putt from 25 feet for birdie on the 18th, to agonizingly miss the magic number 59. Mickelson started his round on the back nine shooting 29(-7). Mickelson then closed with a 31(-4) on the front nine to shoot a first round 60(-11) at the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval, Paul Goydos, and Stuart Appleby are the only players to shoot 59 on the PGA TOUR.

WOW! Phil is one of my favorite golfers. Thanks for the post!
The Grateful Golfer
He is one of my favorite golfers as well. Hope he can keep up the good play and win this week!
It was heartbreaking seeing Phil miss this putt. What a great round of golf and this would have been so well deserved.
Just wonder how many more chances he will get at breaking the magical 60 mark?
